Retro-Rangefinder Design – Manual Dials and Controls
With its appealing retro-rangefinder looks, the Fujifilm X100 has become an instant classic. The X100 is a beautifully designed camera. The top control deck and bottom plate are made from high-precision magnesium alloy giving the camera a robust and solid strength and feel while the chassis is finished in high-quality leather. The dials and rings are precision milled from metal giving you quick access and control over aperture, shutter speed, and exposure compensation even when the camera is turned off. With the look, feel and ergonomics of a classic rangefinder film camera, the shooting experience becomes far more intuitive than beeping your way through multiple menu screens. In your hands, the Fujifilm X100 feels just right, heavy enough to feel solid while light enough to never want to put it down.
“Retro is chic, and digital cameras don’t come more retro (and hence chic) than the X100. It looks like a 1950s Leica, but’s filled with the latest imaging tech, including an amazing optical/digital hybrid viewfinder.” Stuff Cool List 2011
The most interesting and unique innovation of the Fujifilm X100 is the hybrid viewfinder providing both an optical viewfinder and electronic viewfinder mode at the flip of the switch mounted on the front of the camera body. Through the viewfinder window, you have a bright optical view of your subject providing a realistic and intimate feel, while at the same time, you can utilize the benefit of technology given a digital information overlay. With the flip of a switch, you can go to electronic viewfinder mode for the same view you would see on the LCD display including the ability to playback prior shots within the viewfinder itself. The hybrid viewfinder is yet another feature returning us to the joy of shooting with a classic rangefinder film camera, while getting the most from advanced technology. With the Fuji X100 in your hands, and the viewfinder close to your eye, creating your desired composition is fast, efficient and pleasurable.
“The hybrid viewfinder is pretty good, actually what I really mean is, it’s absolutely fanbloomintastic…. the best thing since sliced bread but more technologically advanced.” DigitalRev
Large APS-C CMOS Sensor
The Fujifilm X100 features a large APS-C size CMOS 12.3 megapixel sensor that has been optimized to work efficiently as part of the whole. Three important elements come into play when it comes to producing the excellent image quality created by the X100. It’s the culmination of the 23mm (35mm equivalent) fixed focal length lens, large APS-C sized high-sensitivity sensor and a high-performance EXR image processor that produces extremely high quality images from low sensitivity to high sensitivity. With this perfect collaboration between elements, light is effectively gathered to the perimeter of the sensor resulting in sharper images with exceptional clarity.
The 12.3 Megapixel APS-C CMOS Sensor is ten times the size of sensors found in typical compact cameras. Combined with a high performance EXR image processor and a fixed focal length Prime Fujinon Lens, the Fujifilm X100 produces images of exception quality in all lighting situations. The strength of the large sensor is particularly relevant in low-light photography where little to no image noise will be found. This is a camera that is prepared to shoot anything at anytime optimized for edge-to-edge brilliance.
“…When used in a simple fashion, much like a traditional rangefinder, the X100 is (usually) a delightful photographic tool that is capable of image quality that rivals most DSLRs, but in a much more discreet and portable package.” DP Review
High-performance 23mm F2 Fujinon Lens
The Prime Fujinon 23mm, classic 35mm equivalent, F2 Lens is a masterpiece in optical technology. The components of the lens include an aspherical lens, a 9-blade aperture diaphragm and a built-in ND filter, all of which fit snuggly into a non-collapsible, non-telescoping lens structure further contributing to the look and feel of a classic rangefinder film camera and compact size, but again, with technical brilliance. The large F2 aperture delivers ample brightness and high contrast sensitivity, while also achieving a high level of resolution when the aperture is closed by 1 or 2 stops. The X100’s macro capability makes it possible to shoot a subject as near as four inches away while creating a beautiful soft focus bokeh effect of the background. With the X100’s Prime Fujinon Lens, images are captured with accurate optical clarity and in high resolution. The non-collapsible and non-telescoping system is designed to be ideal for a compact camera and unobtrusive shooting. Images are sharp, clear and full of amazing, accurate and vibrant Fuji color.
“The 23mm lens is sharp from the centre to the edges, while the F/2 aperture makes it easy to creatively throw the background out of focus. The X100 is right up there with the best APS-C sensor cameras on the market.” Photography Blog
RAW Quality – Film Simulation Modes
With one press of the RAW button on the back of the camera body, capturing images in RAW format is a quick and easy. With Fuji’s cool film simulation modes, Velvia, Provia and Astia and the new film simulation mode, Monochrome, we can create a film-like look, feel and texture to images even further making the X100 the perfect blend of past and present.
Provia – Standard
Velvia – Vivid
Astia – Soft
- Multi-Bracketing Functions – The Fujifilm X100 has four types of bracketing functions: AE, ISO, Dynamic Range and Film Simulation. With one press of the shutter, the X100 captures three bracketed images of the scene.
- EVF/OVF Focus Area – With the choice between the 49-point auto electronic viewfinder focus area or the 25-point optical viewfinder auto focus area, plus a selection of 5 different focus area sizes in electronic viewfinder mode, capturing images with your desired subject in focus is fast and efficient.
- Motion Panorama – With the built-in Motion Panorama function, creating 180 degree and 120 degree wide panoramic photos is easy, fun and rewarding.
- HD Movie Mode – Moviemakers can ‘film’ the action in 720 pixel high-definition detail.
The biggest complaint against the Fujifilm X100 is that the user-interface is overly complicated and not user-friendly, as well as other glitches in the firmware. However, Fuji has announced that a firmware update addressing those issues will be available soon.
“This is a terrific, even a landmark camera, likely to be an instant classic. In my opinion it is kept from being truly exceptional by some easily fixed user interface issues. Hopefully a firmware update, which could correct all of them, is not too far off.” Luminous Landscape

The Professional’s Choice
Cool, retro, solid, stylish and shiny, the Fujifilm X100 is a professional photographer’s tool to be reckoned with. It’s truly amazing how the X100 is being embraced by both professional and enthusiast photographers alike. Most interestingly, Leica lovers who previously only said, “Leica, Leica, Leica” are now equally praising the X100… “X100, X100, X100.” Additionally, photographers who typically prefer DSLRs are happy to utilize the X100 for its excellent image quality, manual controls and compact size.
